Sources and corrections

We would rather be corrected than be wrong. Every dispatch lists its sources, so you can check our work, and when you find a mistake we fix it here, in public.

Our policy

  • Tell us. If you find an error of fact in a film or a dispatch, leave a comment on the film. Say what’s wrong and, if you can, where you read otherwise.
  • We check it against the sources. If we were wrong, we fix the dispatch, update its “last updated” date and record the fix in the log below.
  • Films are corrected in the description. A film can’t be re-cut without losing it, so an error in a film is corrected in its description and in a pinned comment, and logged here too.
  • Corrections and updates are different. A correction fixes an error of fact. An update adds new information or explains something more clearly. The log says which is which.
  • A dispute isn’t an error. Where historians disagree, the dispatch already says so. We’ll add a strong argument we missed, but we won’t pretend a question is settled when it isn’t.
